King Sargon's daughter Enheduanna served as the chief priestess of the moon god Nanna-Suen in his temple at Ur (about the 23rd century BCE). Her name, which translates to 'Ornament of Heaven,' reflects the divine aspect of her line of work. As the first-person narrator of several works of Sumerian literature, including the Exaltation of Inanna, and the creator of additional works, such as the Sumerian Temple Hymns, Enheduanna has been hailed as the oldest known identified author in human history. Enheduanna's writings play a significant role in Mesopotamia's rich literary history, even though scribe traditions were traditionally thought to be the domain of men in the ancient world.
