The most famous pirate of his era was Edward Teach, often known as Blackbeard. To scare his adversaries, Teach used 'bloody flags' and black banners with death heads. A horned skeleton holding an hourglass and 'toasting the Devil' with its right-hand made-up Blackbeard's flag. The skeleton's left hand was holding a spear that was aimed toward a crimson heart with three drips of scarlet blood below it, which symbolized that no quarter would be given.
