The earliest goddess in the pantheon of Mesopotamia is Ninhursag, the goddess of earth and mountains. In Sumer, she was first referred to as Damgalnun and Damkina and was connected to fertility. She was also said to have been the creator of both divine and human beings. Her primary responsibility was to take care of people, mostly pregnant women, and little children.
