An inuksuk is a particular stone monument or cairn created by and used by Inuit, Inupiat, Kalaallit, Yupik, and other peoples of the Arctic area of North America. The inuksuk may have formerly served as a navigational aid, a point of reference, a marker for trails, fishing holes, camps, hunting areas, sacred sites, drift barriers used for hunting, or a food cache. The inuksuit, which comes in many sizes and shapes, has a long history in Inuit culture. Stone is piled upon stone is how most inuksuits have historically been constructed. The most straightforward style is a single stone set vertically. The inuksuit are still used as an Inuit cultural emblem.
