Ninkasi Kurunnītu, a Sumerian deity who was known as the goddess of beer, was also the protector of brewers. Her parents were Uruk and Inanna. Sumerians believed that drinking beer was a sign of civility and that doing so was one virtue of society, which was one factor that made her significant. Like other deities, the goddess Ninkasi was mentioned in several myths and hymns. A well-known hymn from the 19th century BCE, known as Ninkar, was the Hymn to Ninkasi. The procedures and information involved in beer brewing were mentioned in Ninkar.
