The snake in Persian culture as a symbol has several opposite meanings. The serpent is one of the hypostases of Angro Mainyu in Zoroastrianism. In Persia, the serpent Azi-Dahak is the 'strangler', the enemy of the sun god. With the advent of Islam, the symbolism changed.
