Stede Bonnet was an English/Barbadian pirate from the early 18th century. The measure of pirate justice was symbolized by his Jolly Roger, which included a skull and a single bone below it with a knife (representing violence) on one side and a heart (representing life) on the other. It was flown, like with all Jolly Rogers and pirate flags, to persuade a ship to give up without a struggle. Before deciding to lead a criminal life, Bonnet was a relatively rich landowner. He was occasionally referred to as 'The Gentleman Pirate' since he had formerly been a prominent member of society.
