Ancus Marzio was the fourth king of Rome, and reigned with a mixture of war and peace. As the son of Pompilia, the daughter of Numa, he was elected Rome's fourth king after the death of Tullus Hostilius. Ancus Marzio resumed Numa's religious policy, restoring the temples and sacred rites. He was also a skilled leader, who subdued the Latins and the Veientians, extending the Roman territory to the sea. To encourage trade and navigation, he built the port of Ostia at the mouth of the Tiber and the Sublicio bridge over the river. He also founded the city of Ficana on the Aventine Hill and transferred many inhabitants of the conquered cities to Rome. Ancus Marzio died of natural causes and was buried on the Janiculum.
