Captain John Phillips was an English pirate. John Phillips's flag is black with a skeleton in the center encircled by a shield and a bloody spear piercing a red heart. The hourglass represents the passage of time to his opponents, the skeleton represents definite death, and the slashed heart represents a brutal demise. He was killed by his own inmates in a surprise attack. He is remembered for the articles about his ship, the Revenge, which are one of the few entire collections of pirate articles to have survived the so-called Golden Age of Piracy.
