Trikaya (Three Bodies) is an important concept in Buddhism, referring to the three manifestations or levels of existence of the Buddha. This term comes from Sanskrit, composed of 'tri' (three) and 'kaya' (body), usually translated as 'possessing three bodies.'
Specifically, Trikaya includes the following three bodies:
1. Dharmakaya (Dharma Body): This is the true essence of the Buddha, consistent with transcendent truth and the nature of the universe. The Dharmakaya is the unity of the Buddha with all existence and also the 'Dharma' (teachings) proclaimed by the Buddha.
2. Sambhogakaya (Enjoyment Body): This is the body in which the Buddha enjoys the truth they embody in the 'Buddha-realm.' The Sambhogakaya is regarded as the divine form manifested by the Buddha when teaching Mahayana scriptures.
3. Nirmankaya (Emanation Body): This is the body in which the Buddha appears in human form to fulfill their vow to guide sentient beings to liberation.
The concept of Trikaya is elaborated in both Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism, and different Buddhist traditions may have varying interpretations and supplements. For example, in Mahayana Buddhism, Trikaya is used to explain different levels of Buddha-nature, while Vajrayana Buddhism views these bodies as different paths to enlightenment.
Additionally, Trikaya is often represented in Buddhist art and architecture in the form of a triangle, symbolizing these three different levels of existence.
