Many people believe that the French pirate Emanuel Wynn, who lived in the 17th century, was the first to fly the Jolly Roger. Near the end of the 17th century, Wynn started his career as a pirate by attacking English trade ships off the coast of the Province of Carolina. His 'black flag,' which had a recognizable skull and crossbones design, was enhanced with another typical pirate symbol, an hourglass, to warn his target that time was running out and that the only way to avoid death was to surrender promptly. There were no other accounts of pirates flying comparable flags, but within 15 years, the skull and crossbones motif and its many variations would come to represent all Golden Age pirates.
